The Board of Education considers this one step in a critical mission: To provide equal access to students, families, staff, and visitors who might rely on crutches, canes, walkers and wheelchairs to move from place to place.
The former Board of Education offices (1890s building) were not accessible. The space would be renovated for instructional use, made accessible according to ADA guidelines, and incorporated into Central Elementary School.
Adding an elevator would improve building access throughout the three-level school.
Reconfiguring and relocating the Main Office, along with nearby restrooms, would be another step toward a barrier-free building.
Accessing the current Elizabeth Haddon Art Room requires individuals who cannot use stairs to exit the building at one level and re-enter at another. The Art Room would be relocated to the main floor and would be completely accessible.
Auditorium renovations would include new seating for everyone, including people who have mobility challenges. Companion seating would be installed, so friends and family can sit alongside each other.
The serving line in the kitchen would be reconfigured and some new equipment would be added. Not only would those modifications meet accessibility goals there, they would also help reduce line backups during lunchtime.
Playground surfaces would be revamped with a poured-in-place product engineered to be smoother than the current shredded-wood mulch. Entry points would have no-step transitions.
This kind of surface is much easier for someone pushing a stroller, using a walker or navigating in a wheelchair – or anyone whose feet need a more even surface on which to walk or run.
Tatem’s main playground already benefits from these features; but its preschool and kindergarten playground would be updated.
Auditorium renovations would replace all seating, including new options for people who have mobility challenges and companion seating.
High school stadium accessibility would be improved by adding companion seating and a chairlift.
Outside the building, parking lot areas and sidewalks would be repaved to improve accessibility. That includes work around the Hopkins Parcel, where a new parking area and sidewalks would be created.
